What OSHA Requires for Safety Data Sheets on Construction Sites
OSHA's construction hazard communication standard, 29 CFR 1926.59, adopts the general industry Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) in full. For construction employers, that means:

Deadlines for Construction Employers
OSHA updated the Hazard Communication Standard in May 2024 to align with Revision 7 of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). In January 2026, OSHA extended the compliance dates by four months. The dates that apply to employers are:
- November 20, 2026
- Update workplace labeling, hazard communication programs and training for newly identified hazards in substances.
- May 19, 2028
- Complete the same updates for mixtures.
Until those dates, employers may comply with either the 2012 or the 2024 version of the standard. As suppliers issue revised SDSs, keeping your library current is the practical first step.

Does OSHA Require Safety Data Sheets on Construction Sites?
Yes. Under 29 CFR 1926.59, which adopts the Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), construction employers must keep an SDS for each hazardous chemical employees use and make it readily accessible during every work shift.
Can Construction SDSs Be Kept Electronically Instead of in a Binder?
Yes. OSHA accepts electronic access when there are no barriers to it — workers must know how to reach the SDSs, and there should be a backup if a device, network or power source fails. mSDS Source provides mobile, QR code and offline backup access.
Who Is Responsible for SDSs on a Multi-Employer Construction Site?
Each employer is responsible for SDSs for the hazardous chemicals it brings on site. Each must also tell the other employers how to access those SDSs, what precautions to take and how its containers are labeled.
What Do Construction Employers Need to Do for HazCom 2024?
Employers must update workplace labeling, hazard communication programs and training for newly identified hazards in substances by November 20, 2026, and for mixtures by May 19, 2028. These dates reflect OSHA's four-month extension published in January 2026.
What If a Jobsite Has No Cell or Wi-Fi Coverage?
Workers still need immediate access to SDS information. mSDS Source Gold Level service includes system backups that work without Wi-Fi, so access does not depend on connectivity.
How Long Do Construction Companies Need to Keep SDS Records?
Under OSHA's records access rule (29 CFR 1910.1020), SDSs are treated as employee exposure records. An employer may discard an SDS as long as it keeps a record of the chemical's identity, where it was used and when, for at least 30 years.
