Do Public Schools Have to Follow OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard?

It depends on your state. Federal OSHA does not cover state and local government employees, which includes public school staff. In states with an OSHA-approved State Plan, public school employees are covered by the state's own hazard communication rules, which must be at least as effective as the federal standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). Private schools are covered by federal OSHA or their State Plan. Check your state's requirements, and treat HazCom as the baseline either way.

Which School Staff Need Access to Safety Data Sheets?

Any employee who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals on the job. In a school district, that usually includes custodial and maintenance staff, science teachers and lab assistants, career and technical education instructors, art teachers, grounds crews, pool operators, and food service staff. SDSs must be readily accessible to them during every work shift.

Can Staff Access SDSs Electronically Instead of in a Binder?

Yes. OSHA allows electronic access to SDSs as long as there are no barriers to immediate access, such as a locked office, a missing password, or no device in the work area. mSDS Source works on desktops, tablets, and phones, so staff can pull up an SDS from wherever they are working.

How Does OSHA's 2024 HazCom Update Affect Schools?

OSHA revised the Hazard Communication Standard in 2024 to align with GHS Revision 7. Manufacturers are issuing revised SDSs and labels on a phased schedule, so districts will receive updated versions of many products over the next few years.
